Gas Fitting in Auckland: What to Know Before You Book a Gasfitter

Gasfitter checking a residential gas meter in Auckland

A faint gas smell by the hob? A new cooktop on order? Tired of swapping BBQ bottles?

Gas is one of the few jobs around the house where the details genuinely matter. A connection can look fine and still leak. An appliance can light and still burn badly.

Here's what Auckland homeowners and businesses should know before booking a gasfitter, and what good work actually looks like.

Signs your gas system needs attention

Often the first clue is small. Watch for:

  • A rotten-egg smell near an appliance, the meter or the bottles

  • Yellow or orange flames where they should be crisp and blue

  • Soot or scorch marks around a heater or cooktop

  • An appliance that's hard to light or keeps going out

  • A gas bill that's crept up with no change in how you use it

Gas faults don't fix themselves. The earlier it's found, the simpler and safer the repair.

Smell gas? Do this first

  1. Turn off the appliance, and the gas at the meter or bottle if you can reach it safely.

  2. Don't use light switches, lighters or anything that could spark.

  3. Open doors and windows to let it clear.

  4. If the smell is strong, get everyone outside and call your gas supplier's emergency line. Then call us on 09 570 2052.

What a gasfitter actually does

Appliance connections

Cooktops, ovens and gas heaters all need the right size of pipe to get enough gas. Undersized pipework is a common reason a new appliance never performs the way the showroom promised. We check the supply before we connect, not after.

BBQ gas connections to the wall

If your home already has gas, your BBQ can run from it. We fit a weatherproof bayonet to an outside wall, and the BBQ clicks in with a flexible hose. No more bottle swaps, and no more running out halfway through dinner.

It works on natural gas or LPG, but your BBQ has to match the gas type. Our full guide to outdoor gas bayonets for BBQs covers placement, cost and what to check on your BBQ first.

Gas hot water installation

Continuous-flow gas hot water means no tank running cold mid-shower. We install and replace these units, sized to how many showers your household actually runs at once. More on our gas hot water installation page, or compare the options in our heat pump vs electric vs gas hot water guide.

Leak testing and repairs

We pressure-test the line to confirm whether there's a leak, find it, and repair it. You'll know exactly what we've found before any work begins.

Commercial gasfitting

For a commercial kitchen or a site that runs on gas, the real cost of a fault is downtime. We plan work around your trading hours, communicate clearly while we're on site, and leave you with the certification your compliance file needs.

How much does a gasfitter cost in Auckland?

It depends on the job: how far the pipe has to run, how easy the access is, and whether new appliances or certification are involved.

We publish our rates in full on our plumbing pricing page, and you'll get a clear quote before work starts. No surprises on the invoice.

How to choose a gasfitter

Check they're licensed. Every gasfitter in New Zealand should appear on the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board public register.

Ask for the certificate. Certified gasfitting work comes with a Gas Safety Certificate. If no one mentions it, ask.

Get the quote in writing. You should know what's included before anyone picks up a tool.

Expect a clear explanation. A good gasfitter tells you what they found and why they're recommending the fix.

Frequently asked questions

Can my BBQ run off my home's gas supply?

Usually, yes. We fit a weatherproof bayonet to an outside wall and the BBQ connects with a flexible hose. The BBQ must match your gas type, natural gas or LPG.

Do you service continuous-flow gas hot water units?

We install and replace continuous-flow units, but we don't service or repair them, because that needs the manufacturer's own diagnostic equipment. Faults on an existing unit go to the manufacturer's service line; for Rinnai that's 0800 746 624.

Will I get a certificate for gas work?

Yes. Certified gasfitting work comes with a Gas Safety Certificate. Keep it with your house documents; buyers and insurers may ask for it.

Which areas do you cover?

East and Central Auckland, including St Johns, Meadowbank, Remuera, Mission Bay, St Heliers, Glendowie, Howick, Pakuranga, Ellerslie and Parnell. See our eastern suburbs and central Auckland pages for more.
