Why insurers ask about Dux Quest
Dux Quest (branded Dux Qest on the pipe itself) is a polybutylene pipe installed in New Zealand homes from roughly 1978 to the mid 1980s. Its grey acetal fittings — the elbows, tees and joiners — were the first to fail, and decades on the pipe itself is failing too. Chlorinated water, hot water temperature and mains pressure all accelerate the ageing.
That failure pattern matters to insurers because of how it fails: usually a slow weep at a joint inside a wall, not a sudden burst. Most house policies treat sudden damage and gradual damage very differently — and a hidden leak that's been quietly soaking a wall cavity for months typically falls on the gradual side of that line, where cover is at its thinnest. Every renewal the pipe stays in, the more likely the question gets asked.
